If you fall behind on your mortgage, contact a housing counselor or an attorney as soon as possible. A new law allows your housing counselor or attorney to request that your bank engage in mediation with you before they can foreclose. In order to take advantage of this new law, you must be working with a housing counselor or an attorney, and they must affirmatively request mediation. The new law went into effect on July 22, 2011.
